Topic > A look at prostitution - 721

“I will do it in the recesses of my mind, to drag out the things that scare me, that block me, that still make me wonder, if I am still nothing more than an object that finds how to please the others. The role of prostitution is never to please without thoughts, to please without emotions, to please without knowing the past and to please without feeling pain. A prostitute is never as real as a human being, she can never have the right to feel, to have dreams, to know a past or to have a future” (Mott). I don't believe prostitution should be legalized because it encourages human trafficking. It exploits women and some children and encourages a destructive career path. Every day men, women and children around the world are deprived of their basic rights and trafficked as sex workers. Traffickers often pray for people who are poor or from low-income families, those who are often unemployed, underemployed, and those who may not have access to social safety nets. Victims are often lured with many false promises regarding job opportunities and helping them live a better life. Every year hundreds of thousands, especially women and children, are victims of trafficking. Prostitution plays an important role in the growing number of human traffickers because the business is fueled by demand for cheap labor and/or services. It also brings high and quick profits with little startup costs. On average, countries where prostitution is legal experience higher influxes of human trafficking. Demand thrives because when some people in the community are unaware of the problem, when government institutions are not trained to respond as often as for other crimes, human traffickers perceive little risk of influencing their operations (“fighting people"). Some might… be middle class… have social prestige. It may not be guaranteed as long-term employment, prostitution isn't much safer than your average job, you may receive no benefits and no vacations or days off. You can't do this type of business, you can't get any recognition, any respect and that's what makes it a bad career path. While some prostitution is a choice, others are not. This is what many people don't realize until some of us can put ourselves in their shoes and endure the pain and suffering, the loss of family members, and the humiliation. I don't think prostitution will help the American economy, fight the spread of STDs, or eliminate sex trafficking. We need our women to be off the streets and safe, not used for sexual acts in exchange for money. Our woman should no longer feel useless and degraded, that's why we must save our women.
