A film is based on how directors have adapted their visions to the screen. When the film first started, it became a standard for how film was made and how the story was told. This led to the beginning of alternative practices in cinema. The stylistic devices found in alternative cinema have led to the deconstruction of classic Hollywood practice. These alternative cinematic styles arise from the extension of meaning. In alternative films every aspect of the film was put there for meaning and purpose. Film is a visual medium that has some characteristics that work well for its way of telling stories. Unlike other mediums such as novels, the imagination in film is already created for the viewer, and in a novel the readers create it themselves. Films take away the options of thought. Films provide us with reality through images and the use of editing. “The classical Hollywood style is itself a stylistic structure, a set of stylistic rules that govern the particular types of films that can be made within it. These rules are designed to make the stylistic structure of Hollywood films invisible, allowing all attention to focus on the flow of the narrative.” (Jeffrey Geiger and R.L. Rutsky). While this is true, it does not mean that alternative filmmaking practices do not follow any guidelines. This means that these alternative film practices were created in response to structured classical practices. In the 1950s there was the emergence of new cinematic practices. It all started with the introduction of French New Wave cinema. A group of directors who wanted to start creating films different from classic Hollywood cinema. Andre Bazin was one of these directors and started a truly darker... half-sheet series. When the film is in Joel's head and he revisits his childhood memories and those with Clementine, the colors are brighter and more vibrant. Sound is another important alternative aspect in this film. The use of music and sound in the film helps complete the film. They offer information and context to scenes. There are two different types of cinematic sound, diegetic and non-diegetic. Non-diegetic sound is sound found within the world of the film itself. If the sound is diegetic, only the audience can hear this sound and it can help create suspense and emotion. Along with sound and music there is silence. Silence can add reality to the narrative. The silence allows him to speak for himself and allows the audience to see the emotions. The sound in this film is very important. Because there is a parallel between two different worlds: the one in the present and the one in Joel's mind.
