For a long time, English has been considered a global language. David Crystal, a British expert, states that “global language is a language spoken internationally by people who speak different languages without replacing their native language” (David Crystal, 2003). Nowadays, more people speak other languages such as Mandarin. Although there are some people who think that English will no longer be the global language in the future, English will continue to have the same power as it does now. Opponents might say that Chinese people are increasing, so Mandarin should be the global language. According to Nationalencyklopedin and “The Future of English as It Was Spoken,” there are approximately 95 million people who speak Mandarin, and approximately 36 million people speak English as their first language. However, there are over a billion people who use English as a second or third language. Nowadays, English speakers in developing countries are also increasing. This is because they know that English is the key to the development of countries. The Guardian, the national newspaper of the United Kingdom, reported that the language can increase the earning power of individuals by around 25% and that developing economies need access to English if they want to grow and position themselves in the global economy (“The Guardian: Research supports English as key to development” par. Furthermore, because companies want to hire excellent people regardless of nationality, they recommend the use of English, according to “The Economist”. Problem of Millennium. For these reasons, the number of people learning English will continue to increase. Although some say that learning English is difficult, English is not too difficult to learn compared to other languages. .....ersity PressNationalencyklopedin: http://www.ne.se/språk/världens-100-största-språk-2010 the future of English as it was spoke: http://www.economist.com/node/17730434The Guardian: Research supports English as key to development: http://www.theguardian.com/education/2011/jul/05/research-backs-english -lingual -delotbiniere The Economist.
