Building Environment Council (Act 43 of 2000) The CBE (Building Environment Council) is established as the body responsible for professional building environment advice which includes architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, quantity surveying, project and construction management, as well as property valuers. Their vision is to have an environment built to meet people's needs and aspirations. They want to achieve this by implementing projects and programs that address built environment issues and add value to the built environment professions, government and the general public. Twenty members were appointed by the Minister of Public Works and the CBE was launched and had its first meeting on 8 April 2000. In November 2000 the CBE was approved by parliament together with the series of laws controlling the six construction environment professions. In September 2001 the law became operational and the six building environment professions councils were established. It was previously called the South African Council for Architects established by Act 35 of 1970 on March 1, 1971. At that time only architects could register, but now professional architects, senior architects technologists, architectural technologists and... half of the paper... and it is currently. Other countries like the US and UK have ±1 engineer for every 310 people and in South Africa there is only 1 for every 3100 people. For this reason they should create more educational institutions to get more qualified engineers. The South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) The SAIA is a voluntary association of the architecture profession. They collaborate with regional institutes and together they want to maintain a high standard of professionalism, integrity and competence. Members of the Constitution strive to improve health and safety standards for the protection and well-being of society. Members who are qualified architects take the lead and act as mentors within the voluntary association of the architectural profession. This allows other members to gain knowledge and this way professionalism can be maintained.
