Topic > Lighting a Fire by Jack London - 995

What would you do if the only thing between you and death was lighting a fire? Most people would obviously light a fire because they don't want to die. This is exactly the same situation a man falls into in To Build A Fire. In this story a man is crossing the Yukon to reach a camp where his friends are. This is a journey he has made many times and can even predict what time he will arrive at that camp. Travel with a dog as a companion. As he walks along the path he has identified he notices many things about his surroundings and the temperature is a constant figure in his mind because if it dropped too quickly it would mean death for him. When he stops to eat, he lights a fire and rests a bit. After sitting with her for a while, the snow that was on the tree above him falls on him because it had begun to melt. When the snow falls, it soaks him all over and puts out his fire in the process. Irritated, he gets up and begins to light another fire because he knows he will have to dry himself before he can leave. This is where the story goes wrong as he fails to start another fire and ends up slowly dying while his dogs run into camp. Throughout this story there are many things that begin to make the reader's mind begin to pick out certain messages. I think the most important part is to pay attention to the setting of this story, because this story has a lot to do with nature. The second most important in the characters because both characters in this story tell a lot when readers start to analyze the traits and actions of the characters which also connect to the plot. In my opinion the main messages of To Build A Fire by Jack London are nature triumphing...... middle of paper...... the story in which nature ends up killing man. That's why the setting is very important in this story, because it shows how powerful nature is and that's why I think that's the main message readers will take away from it. In To Build A Fire a message that comes from the characteristics of the characters is to be humble. Being humble is something difficult to do because human beings like to think that they know everything and are able to control their future, but when they are proud they ultimately condemn themselves. The final message of London's story comes from the plot and is to remain calm in the face of danger. He does not allow this danger to make him react dramatically and die because he remained with his owner in the snow. Keeping calm in the face of danger was demonstrated through the action of each character in the story that makes up the plot.
