Charlotte chose a woman to flaunt feminism but with grotesque behavior. The woman turns away from the light of day and lives in darkness. The woman prefers to sleep during the meaningless day because nothing moves on the wallpaper until night comes. The narrator's imagination darkens as what lies between the patterns manifests. The hideous faces of frozen death are what one seems to see. She represents the many women who tried to break out of their cages but gave up when they got stuck. So he died from suffocation caused by the oppression, read as strangulation for trying to get out. From the begging he suspects that the house has a creepy background. She is surprised until she is locked in that room. The beautiful aspects of the house are kept away from her and only the unpleasant aspects are allowed. She is attracted to what she feels she hates most. It is old, smelly and unpleasant looking but irresistible to her subconscious.
