Priestley shows that tension is within the Birling family in many ways. He created the setting of the show in Birling's dining room, where all the traumatic situations occur, it is also where the unpleasant news of the inspector's arrival arrives. This setting also makes it feel claustrophobic where the audience is controlled by the Inspector's questions which increases the tension of the show between exiting and entering the show. An Inspector Calls begins calmly with "pink and intimate" lighting which once the inspector arrives the atmosphere becomes "brighter and harsher". Priestley is here showing us the warning of the coming dilemmas. This could also mean that the calm will no longer last as the show goes on, just as Mr Birling's optimism is short-sighted. Priestley also created some characters to appear "suspicious", Eric during a conversation between Gerald and Mr. Birling suddenly "chuckles". This foreshadowing makes it seem like Eric may be carrying a burden of secrets that his parents don't know about, but which will be revealed later in the show. There...
