ISO 14001 is the basis for establishing an EMS, a framework that the company can follow to achieve an effective EMS. In fact, the entire ISO 14000 family covers EMS, which includes organisation, monitoring, evaluation and accounting of the organisation's environmental performance (ISO, 2009). However, ISO 14001 is the most recognized scheme for EMS and certification, while the rest of the ISO 14000 family are more guidelines for EMS. To obtain ISO 14001 certification, it is necessary to establish and manage an effective EMS and meet the requirements of ISO 1400 in accordance with the organization's objectives in a sustainable manner (Baumann and Kollmuss, 2011).
