Even today, the controversial issue of homosexuality is still evident and widely discussed in many countries around the world. Even though many people are becoming more open and less skeptical about homosexuality, many others are still reluctant to accept the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) communities as equals. While many might argue that their religion absolutely forbids same-sex marriage, thus rejecting the idea of ​​a homosexual relationship, many of them believe that it is their right to make gays and lesbians heterosexual again. For example, in South Africa, many males practice corrective rape. It is a form of hate crime against lesbians in order to “cure” them of their homosexuality into heterosexuals (Strudwick, 2014). This shows how sick and twisted the minds of homophobes are. Being Catholic, even though I was taught that same-sex relationships are wrong and unnatural, I do not condemn homosexuals or despise them. In fact, I even have gay or bisexual friends. It is good that more and more countries have now implemented new laws to protect the LGBT community. This ensures a lower crime rate and discrimination among LGBT people. Despite the fact that some European countries and many others have legalized same-sex marriage, there is still rejection and objection from some parties, particularly the Roman Catholic Church (Bingham, 2005). Why does the Church have such strong objections? Through my research, I will discuss the Catholic Church's views and teachings on homosexuality and same-sex marriage. Even in the Old Testament of the Bible, the issue of homosexuality has already been discussed.
