Need for the Study: The present study was designed to address the stress and coping strategies employed by engineering and medical students in a semi-urban area of the state of Karnataka. This study will also address how both stress and coping strategies are related to each other. As available research has found that students encounter many stressors in their daily lives (Vivek and Waghachavare 2013). Due to these stressors, students face a large number of difficulties in their educational context. In dealing with these stressors students use different coping strategies and these strategies help them overcome the negative effects of stressful situations and make them excel in their academic life especially (Chandrashekhar 2007). With this in mind, the present study aimed to find the relationship between experienced stress and the type of coping strategies used by students. The present study would also like to find the most effective coping strategy used by these students while dealing with academic stress. For this study I have taken students from medical and engineering colleges of Tumkur district, Karnataka. The level of stress and which coping strategies are best suited while dealing with academic stress would be the main focus of this study. SAMPLE METHOD: The sample consisted of 97 male and 100 female medical students and 91 male and 100 female engineering students. the colleges were selected from the semi-urban area of Tumkur district in the state of Karnataka. Students were selected based on their interest in the study and submission of informed consent. Purposive sampling method...... middle of paper ...... positive action, acceptance and social support are significant with academic stress. However, the results indicate that there is a significant positive correlation between students' stress and coping strategies in the academic context. It reveals that the level of stress increases with the increase in the level of coping strategies. This result is in agreement with previous findings (Rahman Cai-Lian Tem, Teck-Heang Lee, 2013) Implications of this studyNowadays we can find the stress level and stressors that have a negative impact among medical and engineering students. Based on this finding, we need to educate them on what coping strategies will help them prevent or perceive stress as a positive way that never occurs in different academic environments. Through these discoveries we must implement greater stress management skills to prevent stress-related disorders.
