Cristoforo Colombo was born in Genoa, Italy, to Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarossa. Almost nothing is known about Columbus' childhood, but he is said to have been highly educated and spoke seven different languages. As a boy he went to sea on a sailing boat. He continued this way throughout his old age (Amanda Briney). In 1497, Columbus met his brother Bartholomew, who was a cartographer, in Lisbon. He later met his wife Filipa Moniz Perestrello and married her. Shortly after their marriage, his wife Filipa gave birth to their son Diego in 1480. In 1485 Columbus' wife died. For a better life, Columbus and his son went to Spain. After receiving the approval of the King and Queen of Spain, Columbus set sail on August 3, 1492. He used 3 ships on his voyage, the Pinta, the Nina, and the Santa Maria. . After 2 months at sea, a member of the ship, Rodrigo de Triana, sighted land on October 12, 1492 at 2 am.
