When Elie first arrived at Auschwitz, Elie told his father that he didn't believe the Nazis could burn people because humanity wouldn't let that happen. His father responded by saying that: “Humanity does not care about us. Today everything is allowed. Everything is possible, even these crematoria…” (Wiesel 42). By losing faith in humanity, they lost faith in each other. Human beings, being the social being that they are, without mutual trust and a common faith eventually become empty and cold. They only care about doing what they have to do to survive. Elie saw all of this happening around him and even had the same thoughts bubbling in his mind. He fought hard throughout the story, but towards the end he gave up. He had lost everything: his God, his family, his faith in humanity, all gone
