When the class is asked, why do some sports attract more interest than others? I decided to take a more gender-based approach to this question to try to find the answer to why men's sports are more popular than women's. Men have a more “masculine” build, which makes them better athletes overall. Although women's bodies were built to be more flexible and elegant for leaping across a dance floor or flipping across a balance beam, it is not common for women to be able to take on each other for a sport. This is demonstrated by the common interest in women's gymnastics or volleyball in the Olympics, but a greater interest in men's track and field or swimming. Why is the public more attracted to the Super Bowl than to a cheerleading tournament? In the book, most reality shows on TV make their plots very dramatic to keep the audience engaged in the show and coming back to watch more. The same goes for sports. If given the choice to watch men's or women's basketball, more people would likely choose men's basketball because men tend to be more aggressive after something goes wrong. When talking about the biological differences between men and women, Hargreaves states; “The common assertion that men are naturally more aggressive, more competitive, and therefore better at sports than women suggests that these are inherent and therefore immutable conditions” (146). With this quote, he is showing that because men are more aggressive, they are more capable of playing the game. For example, when trying to defend his opponent in basketball, a man would be more likely to foul due to the more aggressive nature he was raised with. Women are more capable of being tossed into the air gracefully, which is what it takes to be a cheerleader. . Men on the other hand are faster and that's why watching a men's basketball game is more entertaining than watching a women's basketball game. Jennifer Hargreaves talks about how in the early 1920s there was popular demand to play women's football. Many clubs were formed and the game was enjoyed by both players and spectators until the Football Association closed down women's football, saying: "the game of football is wholly unsuitable for women and should not be encouraged" (142). In this we are shown that even when women tried to play as fair as possible to men, this was blocked simply because of the way women are supposed to act. Now we have flag football, so the tackling and aggressive, violent play as seen in men's football. The public would be more inclined to watch men's football because football should be played with tackling and aggression where flag football cannot be played in such a way
