This may be voluntary on the part of the individual, but if the organization promotes this behavior then it may be considered an acceptable culture. There are laws in place that have resulted in the workplace promoting diversity and establishing principles that include equal opportunities on the basis that women are underrepresented. However, many workplace diversity initiatives require tolerance of differences between individuals. As a result, personal biases are possible and unconscious discrimination in the treatment of men and women may occur. It is important that organizations promote a philosophy of acceptance through effective diversity training programs that foster an inclusive environment. When employees feel included and personally invested in diversity, they become more aware of biases and simulate the involvement of others who may be “tolerant” of diversity.
