Topic > Stanford Prison Experiment Essay - 1307

Apparently #8612 would take a gang of friends, return, and free all the prisoners. Zimbardo describes his reaction at the time as one of maintaining security in his prison, rather than observing what would happen, as a psychologist would. Zimbardo cleared out the prison and waited for the "gang" to show up, but they never did. The rumor turned out to be false and the research team rebuilt the prison. A whole day without any data collected. Harassment has increased. Push-ups were done, prisoners had to clean toilets with their bare hands, and great amounts of humiliation were always in store for the prisoners. #819 was the next prisoner to have a nervous breakdown. After refusing to meet the priest, the guards forced the prisoners to chant the number 819. Zimbardo himself tried to calm #819, but to no avail. He had a nervous breakdown and didn't stop crying until Zimbardo released him, which he seemed shocked about. Things continued to get worse until Zimbardo stopped the simulation, saying “enough, we have to stop this”. It only ended on the 6th day after intending to go for 2 weeks. Zimbardo made all the prisoners and guards reconcile afterwards, having them discuss all the moral conflicts and alternatives they might have taken. The experiment was finally over.
