George Orwell created two main characters who have contrasting traits and believe in the idea of love in a world where it is forbidden. Although both are secret Party rebels and share the same hatred for the Party's totalitarian power, Julia and Winston display a notable number of differences between them. The differences between them include their morality, their motivation towards rebellion, and their personality. Julia represents elements of humanity that Winston does not: survival, instincts, pure sexuality and cunning (1984 George Orwell's Character Analysis of Julia). His actions show a lack of emotional connection to anyone, even Winston. Whatever feelings of connection he once shared with Winston do not overcome the fear of his own mortality. Julia is a true survivor and is willing to do any act to further her self-centered rebellion. He spent a surprising amount of time attending conferences and demonstrations, distributing materials for the Junior Anti-Sex League, preparing banners for Hate Week. , collecting for the rescue campaign, and similar activities. It paid off, he said: it was like camouflage. If you kept the little rules you might break the big ones (Orwell 129). She presents herself as a passionate follower of the Party, but beneath the surface she embodies the spirit of a bird; his desires are to be free and enjoy life. Winston is the exact opposite; he is consciously determined to differentiate reality and fiction. This is demonstrated when Winston learns of Julia's sexual history. “His heart skipped a beat. He had done it dozens of times; he wished it had been hundreds of thousands. Anything that hinted at corruption always filled him with crazy hope." (Orwell 125). The sudden surprise...... middle of paper......r problems. Julia maintains her demeanor and is portrayed as calm and collected. “He became alert and professional, dressed, tied his scarlet sash around his waist, and began arranging the details of his journey home.” (Orwell 129) This allows the reader to see that Julia is organized in her life, unlike Winston whose thoughts are scattered. Because of the extreme differences in the couple's personalities, the reader may wonder whether Julia ever loved Winston. Julia embodies the qualities that Winston wishes he had. The differences in their morality, their motivation towards rebellion and their personalities are the few reasons why they are attracted to each other, but it is bittersweet as their differences cause their downfall. The two characters created by George Orwell needed each other to create a refuge from the heartless world of 1984.
