The narrator tells stories that show a connection to his father. In “The Christmas Turkey” the son has conflicts with his father because he blames his father's death for trying to ruin Christmas. The death of his father causes pain to the entire family making it difficult for the family member to move forward. This implies that the father has a strong hold on the family. The son in “The Third Riverside” has a stronger bond with his father. Even after his father leaves him behind, he still tries to connect by providing food along the riverbanks. He thinks he's the only one who truly understands what his father wants. Furthermore, he felt affection and respect for his father, especially when other people praised him for looking and acting more like his father. Over time, when the other family member moved away, he was the only one who decided to stay. When the son grew older, he decided that he would take his father's place, but fear got the better of him and he ran away. However, when death came, he decided that he wanted to be put in a canoe and travel down the river like his own
