Topic > Distinguished Scholar Program - 923

The Distinguished Scholar Program is a rigorous and difficult program. Encourage students to challenge themselves and reach their full potential. Changing some rules and parts, like lowering the required grade point average (GPA) and dropping some of the more rigorous classes, like Honors Chemistry, can really make it a beneficial and successful program in the regular education system. Not to mention the vast improvement in student test scores and overall approach to education. Distinguished Scholars is a curriculum unique to Wilson Classical High School in the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD). It is a combination of Advanced Placement (AP) classes, honors courses, and students must take eight classes instead of the five or seven classes required by other schools. Many students in this program face additional challenges and pressures resulting from the program. While other teenagers go out at 1.10pm and have fun after school, these students wait until 2.50pm or some even until 4am during placements. This program would be very useful if provided with some adjustments to fit into the regular education system. To begin with, the Distinguished Scholar Program (DSO) was established to successfully nurture talented and brilliant students. These students subsequently fulfill most college requirements. For example, the DSP and Honors Program require a minimum of 280 credits. These are two of the only programs in the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) that require significantly more credits. Other high schools require only 220 credits for graduation: students must commit to three college-level courses and honors courses in science, English and social studies. The purpose... at the heart of the card... is not the temptation to engage in bad social activities. An example of the above would be smoking, doing graffiti, joining a gang, fighting and having unprotected sex. Additionally, additional help and higher education prevent students from backsliding or becoming discouraged and even dropping out. To surmise, the Distinguished Scholar Program (DSP) is a great curriculum that should be included in the education system at a general level. It will help challenge the minds of young and able students. The DSP involves such a difficult curriculum and should be balanced with incentives and/or have positive support for the good of the student. With such a vigorous program comes higher test scores and grades. The inclusion of this program will make the education system more effective. Ultimately, it would create better futures for every single student.
