Knee osteoarthritis is a serious problem of chronic joint pain and reduced mobility of the knee joint (Iwamoto et al., 2011). Osteoarthritis is also one of the most common pathologies in the elderly. In January 2007, there were 240,366 men and 417,033 women affected by the condition osteoarthritis in the Netherlands. Osteoarthritis continues to increase with age. The number of daily admissions to hospitals increased markedly in the period between 1995 and 2010, from 2,229 in 1995 to 10,172 in 2010. Osteoarthritis is almost twice as common in women than in men (National Institute for Public Health and Environmental Hygiene (RIVM, 2013) ).
