Topic > Sociological Perspectives on Religion - 994

“Religion is a ritualized system of beliefs and practices relating to things defined as sacred by an organized community of believers.” (Basirico et al. 379). Religion is an important element in society because it influences the way individuals act and think. It shaped relationships and bonds between families, as well as influenced decisions made in economics and politics. Religion in general has helped shape a society and a government structure that will influence how individuals behave under a certain government structure. Sociologists are interested in religion primarily because religious belief is strongly rooted in the lives of individuals and helps sociologists interpret human actions, expressions, and experiences. Because of its importance in society, sociologists seek to study religion in depth to explain and understand religions beyond science. Supernatural belief, which is the core of religion, cannot be explained using science which is based only on facts and data. According to Emile Durkheim, religion is composed of three elements, a system of beliefs and practices, a community or church, and sacred things common to all religions. Although many people may have thought that sociological studies on religion can weaken a person's faith towards their beliefs, in my opinion the sociological perspective in religion will have no effect on a person's faith towards their beliefs. Religion may have influenced the way an individual, society, and government acts, but sociological studies on religion have no effect on faith. Scientists believe that religion is simply a psychological effect. There is no proof of the existence of God and a scientific explanation on shamanism that revolves around...... middle of paper ...... Another fact is that, even if sociology and science continue to question the he existence of supernatural power, the practice of one's religion is still deeply rooted in society. This proved that sociology and science do not influence faith. Furthermore, sociology has a neutral role in religion because sociologists see religion as part of culture that must be preserved without being eliminated or changed. Therefore, it does not seek to undermine or strengthen one's faith. Furthermore, scientists have also come to believe that supernatural power somehow exists in society because they have invented equipment used to explain supernatural phenomena. This means that science has tried to adapt and accept that religion is an important study in science. Therefore, science and sociology have a neutral role in influencing people's faith.
