Hassan lives his life being loyal to Amir. He always stated to Amir “for you, a thousand times” that he meant every word. He sacrificed himself for Amir his whole life and never expected anything in return. His first words spoken were Amir's name, which shows how much he held Amir close to his heart. The first instance where his loyalty is demonstrated is Amir's encounter with Assef, when he tries to beat him. “You're right, Agha. But maybe you didn't realize that I'm the one holding the slingshot. If you make a move, they'll have to change your nickname from Assef "the ear eater" to "One-eyed Assef", because I have this rock pointed at your left eye. (Hosseini 28). Hassan stands up to Assef forcing him to back down. He protected Amir from Assef, which Amir does not do for him later in the novel. When Amir won the kite tournament, Hassan ran away for the kite Hassan refuses to give him the kite, knowing its importance to Amir. This leads to Hassan being raped. Assef calls him a "loyal dog", this was Hassan's price for keeping Kite. He was so loyal to Amir that he even got raped for him. No matter what Amir put Hassan through, he always tried to remain friends. A true test of his loyalty was right after Amir's birthday, he took the gifts there were his birthday money and a watch, and placed them under Hassan's
