Topic > Reflection paper on the Phaedo - 1702

Socrates receives objections to this idea several times within the Phaedo, also criticized by Simmias. These arguments shake the confidence of those present in the room, forcing Socrates to pause for some time. Although Socrates provides no evidence for this, he is not shaken in his belief before death, certain of his soul's passage to the next life. Simmias and Cebes both construct arguments against Socrates' affinity argument that are quite valid, having to do with the form of a thing and how in its lifelessness it continues to exist, or does not exist.
