Gregorius is considered an important figure for the city. Rev. Gregorius symbolizes a church authority. Sonderberg opens the book with Dr. Glas describing his hatred for Rev. Gregorius. “By pressing a button in the wall I could kill the priest, I think I should do it” (15). Throughout the book, Glas expresses his sincere hatred towards Rev. Gregorius. Hating Rev. Gregorius symbolizes Glas' disdain for the church, more specifically religion. When Glas kills Rev. Gregorius, Glas is removing his connection to religion.
