There is also a thin dark brown underpainting under the mill. Rembrandt's painting style changes depending on the area of the landscape he is working on. In the seemingly dark areas of the mill he uses thin paint, while in the sky, water and plants he uses broad brushstrokes and minimal impasto. Mill's analysis via x-ray showed that the hill in the painting was lowered on the left side and the bridge and reflection had been removed from the entire painting. Additionally, the water adjacent to the mill was re-landscaped, and the boat and rowing man were added at a later stage in the painting's development. These detailed analyzes of the painting show that Rembrandt had no clear picture of what to paint at that time, and simply continued with his painting.
