This play is ultimately about one person defying another person and paying the price. Antigone went against the law of the land, established by the newly crowned King Creon. Antigone wished to do the right thing by her brother and bury him according to her religious beliefs, even though Creon considered him a traitor and ordered him to be left to be devoured by animals. Creon was passionate about being king and making his mark from his new throne. Although they differed in their opinions, the passion that Creon and Antigone shared for those opinions was the same, they were equally passionate for their opposing opinions. Creon would have found it very difficult to see that he had anything in common with Antigone, however since he seems to be in conflict with everyone, in his mind he must only stick to his opinions to distinguish himself as king. Before ascending the throne Creon took advice from the prophet Tiresias who had many times been his spiritual and moral compass, yet in this matter of Antigone he will not accept advice from anyone, neither from the elders of Thebes, nor from his own son Haemon. The book also features a conflict between Antigone and her sister Ismene. In the opening chapter, Ismene becomes the focus of this morality tale as she represents everything that was expected of women in 5th BC Greece. She alone, in her dialogue, shows us from the beginning why Antigone is so courageous in her decision to bury Polyneices when he says; “Two women alone facing a death decree – women, defying Creon? It's not a place for women. We are weak where they are strong. Whether it's this or worse, we have to do what we're told. .tive of our society and yet, on the other hand, if we do our part by voting we must support it. In America there was a very positive push behind Barack Obama's path to the presidency and yet in the following two years, having been affected by the electorate's expectation of the Messiah, his popularity declined rapidly. Living up to voters and a nation's expectations of you must be incredibly difficult, especially if results are sought so quickly. Let's hope Obama is given the space to be the person America hopes he will be as Americans continue to do their best for each other, not for themselves. The only way characters like Creon, Bush, Blair, etc. can truly make themselves immortal for the right reason is to ask what will work best for all of us, instead of what will work best for me.
