Topic > Oppression by Marylin Frye: The concept of oppression…

If a young woman is sexually active, she may be called many derogatory terms such as slut, whore, slut, etc. If this young woman were to become pregnant, it would be seen as her fault. Even worse, if she were to be raped by someone, since she participates in heterosexual acts, people would say that she "enjoyed it." It's really sad. On the other end of the spectrum, if a woman did not take part in sexual acts, she would be labeled “man-hating,” “uptight,” or “frigid” (150). Another analogy used by Frye is the birdcage example. If you focus on one wire, you won't see the rest of the wires in the cage. You might wonder why the bird doesn't fly away, when in fact it is completely caged. Oppression is difficult to see and recognize. The only example I didn't like in this essay was holding the doors. Somehow, Frye says that if a man were to hold the door for an able-bodied woman, it would be a sign of disrespect. I always hold doors for people, I couldn't care less if you're a man, a woman, black, white, green, purple. For me I'm simply doing a kind gesture and I'm not being rude. Oppression is a macroscopic phenomenon and if we look at it on a microscopic level we will not be able to see it. Oppression exists and until we start looking at the bigger picture, we will never fix the situation
