Topic > Character Analysis of King Lear - 1141

The play of King Lear was something I had never read before. It was so confusing to me, the way they spoke in such big words. The characters in the play were so competitive and selfish. Lear's daughters were so cruel, except Cordelia. She actually wanted to take care of her father unlike the other two girls who only liked Lear's materials. The way Goneril and Regan prefer him to stay out in the crazy storm, instead of being with them. The girls were already so envious and competitive with each other; the situation did not improve things. Lear just wanted to love them, and they loved him and paid attention to him, but he couldn't get it from them. The women in the play controlled the men, while the men listened to them as they asked for orders. The two daughters are mad, because they heard that Lear had divided his kingdom. They don't want to have to share it; they wanted to control everything. They don't want Cordelia to control the kingdom because they are too jealous of her. Lear is trying his best to get his daughters love from them but it is difficult because they are fond of materialistic things, they don't care about him. The main act I wanted to focus on was the fourth act. I couldn't believe the way they gouged out Gloucester's eyes and stomped on them... truly horrible! In the first scene, Gloucester explains how he regained his sight and that he would do everything in his power to see his son again. When Edgar finds out what happened to his father, he is horrified. He can't believe they did something like that to him. Lear on the other hand, is going mad from Goneril and Regan's abuse of him, and is trying to find someone to help him. Girls, I feel the need to stop being so envious of each other... middle of paper... the girls ended up dying anyway, the men are the ones who survived. The women brought about their own deaths by acting as they did with everyone and with each other. The closest sisters ended up killing each other. For having so much faith in each other, they turned against each other, and neither was able to maintain the kingdom. Overall, women back then were very different from what they are and act today. Then they did everything in a sneaky and cruel way. Women today have and can be in control of situations, rather than having to ask men to do things for them. Women have much more power and control than they had back then. Back then they depended a lot on men, on defending women, on having to help them get what they wanted. For a few days now, we women no longer need men to depend on. We can get help without them and do things on our own.
