Topic > Personal Project - 2033

My purpose in doing this project was to improve my community; as I learn about the foundations of my community and hope to inspire others to want to do the same. By donating books to the ENT department, otherwise known as ear, nose and throat specialists, at the King's Daughters (CHKD) Children's Hospital, many of my personal goals would be achieved. For example, one of my goals was to learn about the ENT specialist profession and how they specifically helped the Hampton Roads area. After learning what an ENT doctor does in the lives of children at CHKD, I made it my goal to help improve the lives of patients in this department by providing books to ease what can be a stressful hospital experience. Another of my goals was to inspire members of my community by educating them about some of the issues these same children face; Likewise, donating reading materials can be very helpful, so such education motivates my community to do as I did and donate books as well. My interest in the Ear, Nose and Throat department arose from the fact that I am a regular visitor to this department as I often have ear and nose problems. I currently have a deviated septum and inner ear issues which result in an extreme lack of balance and sometimes hearing ability. When I was in hospital, I had always found reading to be very helpful in relieving my stress and it seemed that my problems didn't seem that serious as you don't have to hear to be able to read. Since the AOI I focused on was Community and Service, I began to focus my project on a book donation campaign that could help improve the lives of patients who visit E...... middle of paper ...... local children's hospital and what they do for my local community. During my investigation I was surprised by the amount of people near me who have experienced medical conditions similar to mine, but have not been fortunate enough to find ways to relieve their stress. Being able to serve people in my community has given me a lot of personal satisfaction as I can relate strongly to the patients in the ENT department as ultimately, “Things happening around the world are affecting you and me” (Flare). have a new perspective on the world around me and what others experience as it is important to recognize and be of help to those in need; However, most people don't realize that there are many needy people close to home. I hope to continue helping members of my community and in the future be able to encourage others to do the same.
