Topic > Feminist critique of feminism - 989

Feminist critique is a theory that emphasizes how gender, race, etc. are considered in a piece of literature. It's a comparison between how society sees them and how they are written. Feminist critics worry about how women are written in a piece. They also like to look at the different stereotypes people have about women and how they can change them. "King Lear" by William Shakespeare is a tragic play. There are so many theories that could be applied to this play, but the theory of feminism is the best way to describe all the conflict going on. As time passes we realize that women are the cause of everything that happens. The way Shakespeare writes about women is opposite to society's view of them. The women he writes about are considered the stronger sex, but at that time it was men who ruled the kingdoms. Everything in a kingdom is run by men, but in this play, women slowly take over. In Act 1, Lear has all this land he needs to get rid of and chooses to divide it among his daughters. Cordelia is the youngest daughter and is very independent. Regan and Goneril are the eldest daughters and abuse their power in many ways. The daughters must prove their love to him to obtain the land. Regan and Goneril lick him and tell him they love him. In fact they don't love him at all. They just want more power. Cordelia is very direct with him. She tells him she loves him but not as much as her sisters. Lear gets angry at his response, which shows that the daughters have enough power to make him feel whatever emotion they want. They can easily get under his skin and strip him of his power. His power was at an all-time high, but over time he gained the upper hand. In sc...... middle of paper ......d Shakespeare wrote about it. Women only experienced being housewives. They were never able to fill the position of a male because society didn't think they were strong enough. The authors wrote from their perspective. I imagine them writing about the power they wished they had. They wanted to have characteristics similar to those of a man. They didn't want to be stereotyped by society. Female critics have attempted to change these stereotypes by writing about them. Male authors also wrote from their point of view. I think they would write about how much power they have. Some didn't think women needed more power. Then Shakespeare came along and wrote the exact opposite of what society thought. It changed the way society viewed them. She wrote through a more feminine point of view. It looked at both points of view and included society's opinions.
