Air Pollution in Peru IntroductionPollutants and toxic wastes have been a major contributor to air pollution and other toxic smog. More recently, Peru has recorded higher levels of air pollution than ever before. These extremely high levels are mainly due to high emissions from cars which contain many harmful gases; to people and the environment. Despite the many efforts undertaken to improve the state Peru's environment is currently in, in reality not much change has been seen. The emergence of air pollution in Peru has been quite rapid as many older cars produce more emissions than they are used to and factories are increasing the amount they emit into the air. Lima, the capital of Peru (shown in Figure 1), suffers from the worst air pollution among all other capitals in Latin America due to many toxic chemicals such as nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide, two which are very harmful for man and the environment. Humans should not be exposed to such chemicals, so several negative effects have resulted from exposure. The level of damage currently facing Peru is very high and serious actions are needed to ensure that it can stabilize and return to average pollution levels. The purpose of this document is to assess the impact of toxic emissions in Peru and recommend solutions to manage these impacts. Description Peru, which has a population of about seven million people, experiences some of the most frequent and worst concentrations of air pollution. Concentration levels detected between 2001 and 2005 averaged about 185 micrograms per cubic meter of air, which placed Lima in the top 10 percentile for highest exposure to pollutants among... half of the paper... definitely a major problem in Peru due to large amounts of toxins coming from cars and factories, however with the few suggested solutions Peru may be able to recover and keep pollution levels at normal levels.
