Reality TV has been a very popular part of American society since its conception, but does it go beyond just entertainment? As they progressed, the content of these shows became increasingly vulgar on and off screen. The producers and “actors” of these programs are hungry for money and attention, a hunger that grows exponentially along with the possibilities of reality television. The question that is often asked is: does reality TV have a negative effect on our society? The answer is simple: absolutely! Reality TV is produced and directed by people who know exactly how to manipulate the truth. Run by those who lie to the public's face and can get away with it legally. The shows reach a very impressionable society and deeply implant immorality, negative self-image, and other issues that threaten American society. Reality television harms those who find themselves in the unfortunate, but common, situation of being exploited on these programs and does so intentionally for the sake of money and ratings. The way reality TV portrays reality is completely misleading. It means giving the public what they want in a very unethical way, completely lying about how to get to a “truth”. The people behind the scenes of reality have found a way to seamlessly edit everything the audience sees so as to keep only the “juicy stuff” (Crouch pg 1). Often, producers of competing shows will intervene if the plan was to eliminate someone who is good for ratings (Crouch pg 4). Construction schedules often lie about the skills needed, prices, and the amount of time needed for projects (Crouch p. 5). Whenever a show has “big surprises,” it is almost entirely staged because there is a very complicated process needed for the dramatic shots and lighting… middle of the paper…” He is referring to this like schadenfreude, or taking pleasure in the misfortune of others (Hazlett par 5) That's not to say there aren't lessons to be learned in reality TV, but it presents these lessons in a non-beneficial, unhealthy, and ineffective way a negative and manipulative influence on ours culture. It is an example of pure immorality. The public has been deceived by the multinationals that have taken over the impressionable citizens of our society such advantageous technology must be addressed and it must be addressed soon. Here a single person cannot make a difference, it must be stopped from the bottom. Producers must understand that just because it is useful for ratings does not also make it useful for society!
