The traditional American family, consisting of a “breadwinner” father, a “stay-at-home” mother, and their children, can be traced back to the 1950s as the most popular type of family . This type of family is what many people would think of when they think of the typical family. Nowadays, fewer people think of the nuclear family as the typical American family. The American family in the 21st century is in decline due to factors such as rising divorce rates, division of labor, and cohabitation. Nuclear American was so successful because parents liked the way the family worked. They enjoyed each of their responsibilities that come with being a mother or father, living together, and raising children (CherlinThe American nuclear family consists of a father who works and puts a roof over his family's heads, while the wife takes care of the children and complete household chores. Now, the rate of mothers working is rapidly increasing, but fathers do not want to reciprocate by participating in household chores. Men are used to working, rather than women in the world of working at home work are creating discussions about sharing housework and are causing tensions between married couples. Work at home and at work pushes women to work much more than men who do work, but not at home (Tichenor 2010:668). As a result, “women's new economic independence has combined with other social and cultural trends to produce unprecedented numbers of divorced and unmarried parents and cohabiting couples…” (Coontz 2010:55). Women entering the workforce and demanding the division of labor from their husbands are upsetting the idea of the breadwinning father and the stay-at-home mother and causing families to split, which is deepening America's nuclear decline. As David Popenoe, the author of “American Family Decline, 1960-1990: A Review and Appraisal” states: “…the term decline is important because it provides the best solution for many of the changes that have taken place. These changes…clearly indicate that the family as an institution has weakened” (Popenoe 1993:536). Popenoe argues that changes in society are leading to the decline of the once dominant family type. The definition of the American nuclear family will not change because it has been a fixed term for many years. But the prevalence of the American household absolutely can decline and is doing so rapidly. It is clear that divorce, division of labor and cohabitation are very beneficial and improve the quality of life of many people, so it is not argued that these are negative concepts. The point is that these types of alternative lifestyles are leading to the decline of the traditional American family because they are becoming more and more numerous
