Cyberbullying is defined as being cruel, threatening, or mean-spirited towards someone through forms of technology, including computers via the Internet or via cell phone. Cyberbullying causes its victims to suffer from shame, embarrassment, anger, depression and withdrawal, and even in extreme situations it can lead to teen suicide, as cited on www.cyberbullying.info. Through the use of action plans, the Year 11 Health Education course aimed to decrease the prevalence and increase awareness of cyberbullying among the Year 9 student cohort at Meridan State College. The Year 11 Health Education class identified that cyberbullying occurs in Year 9 at Meridan State College, due to the socio-cultural factors that influence individuals in their daily lives. Peer groups have a huge influence on students today, as they set standards, influence others around them, and even follow examples shown through the media. The health education class conducted a preliminary survey distributed to ninth grade students and the results identified a need for community action at Meridan State College regarding cyberbullying. Following this survey, individual Year 11 health education students constructed action plans and these were piloted by Year 9 students. (Some action plans could not be administered due to individual issues) . A follow-up survey was then conducted and the data was surprising, as the results had changed significantly from the previous survey. For example, only 63% of ninth grade students (pre-survey) blocked bullies online if they were bothered by them, and post-survey analysis showed that 92% of students blocked bullies (see Appendix 1) . There was a 29% difference in results and more students were aware of how crucial it was… halfway through the paper… outrage must be attacked before it gets out of control and Year 11 Health La class will continue to facilitate, mediate and advocate against cyberbullying at Meridan State College.
