Macbeth, written between the years 1603 and 1606, is one of William Shakespeare's most famous plays. This play is based on historical events modified by Shakespeare from Raphael Holinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland. This drama chronicles the rise of the ambitious Macbeth to the throne of Scotland. It describes the numerous murders and evil plans that Macbeth undertook to consolidate his power. Many of Macbeth's accounts are historically accurate; however, some parts of the play were adapted and changed to fit the current times in which Shakespeare lived. It is noted that "Macbeth's interest is not a historical interest" (Boyce, "Banquo"). Shakespeare deviated from the chronicles in several aspects to please the king of his time. Macbeth was written solely to gratify King James I of England. Shakespeare pays homage to King James in many different ways. He aspired for Macbeth to support James' political agenda. Throughout history, England and Scotland had been historical enemies, but were now ruled by the same monarch. Shakespeare wanted his writings to unite them in a way that politics could not. After 1603 it became politically incorrect to write rudely about the Scots. Shakespeare used his work to “advance the king's agenda by creating and emphasizing commonalities” between Scotland and England (Bloom, p 44). It is well known in history that King James was deeply superstitious before he became king. James wrote various works on witches based on his earlier superstitions, such as Daemonologie. Written in 1599, Daemonologie served as the basis for depicting the roles and images of witches in Macbeth (Boyce, “Macbeth”). In his early years, King James enjoyed… middle of paper… gaming (Boyce, “Duncan”). Shakespeare used story as the structure of his work. He altered characters and events to please his king. Shakespeare knew that King James was becoming very skeptical of the supernatural; therefore, he included the numerous capabilities that a person's imagination could have in his actions. This ultimately proved that people's minds can cause people to see, hear and do certain things. He also demonstrated that the supernatural did not need to be involved to cause people to do evil things. Shakespeare changed Banquo and Duncan in his play by making Banquo virtuous and Duncan weak. This made King James happy because his ancestor was portrayed as a good person and made the murder even more gruesome. To create the ideal play that King James would approve, Shakespeare changed the story and created one of his greatest plays of all time..
