Director Francis Lawrence's 2007 film adaptation of author Richard Matheson's I Am Legend is the perfect selection for the classy film FYS 175. Oscar winner Will Smith plays the role of legendary Robert Neville. Robert Neville's character is a somewhat messianic figure in the apocalyptic story. Robert's dog, Samantha, is the perfect faithful companion. Towards the end of the film, Anna and Ethan Montez appear and help further Robert's legend. The film portrays a dystopian time in the world, while still conveying a sense of hope. It is this sense of hope contained in I Am Legend that allows the film to fit this course perfectly. The class film FYS 175 is a film that depicts apocalyptic and eschatological meaning. It's important that the Oscar-winning film about the end times paints a picture of hope towards the end, as I Am Legend does. Hope is an important theme in all the eschatological readings of the courses. Each reading composition paints the story of a group of people living in a gloomy state, all the while hoping to be delivered to utopia. The plot of I Am Legend is identical to this common theme of flourishing hope. The main character Robert Neville possesses the same hope and determination as the people of the cargo cults and the children of Fatima. The film lacks the theme of millennialism while placing strong emphasis on the apocalyptic and eschatological meaning. I Am Legend presents an interesting theory of the end of the world that was not directly discussed in fiscal year 175. I Am Legend presents the idea of the end of the world due to medical advances. Although this theory was not directly discussed within the course, the theory of the apocalypse occurring due to humanity's overall advancements was prevalent... halfway through the article... by a man living a lifestyle solitary and suggests to the viewer what it would be like to be the only living man. The special effects used in the film create the image of somewhat demonic apocalyptic characters. The director chose to use computer-generated imagery to make the zombies look real. Computer-generated images allowed the zombies to constantly hyperventilate and appear to be highly infected with the virus. I Am Legend certainly qualifies to be the Oscar-winning film of End Times, for its apocalyptic, eschatological and hopeful meaning. Robert sacrifices his life to cure the human race, which is symbolic of the death of Jesus Christ. Although life ends for Robert, his legend allows for the birth of a new and hopefully better society. It is this utopian ending that proves that I Am Legend should be the film of the FYS class 175.
