The French Revolution was a major uprising in European history that quickly accelerated to the point of causing bloodshed and despair. French class systems were heavily enforced in this period and the nobility and clergy were unfairly placed on a much higher pedestal than all other citizens. Between 1789 and 1799, French peasants united in a rebellion to overthrow those in power following years of mistreatment, repression, and economic frustration. In A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, he covers in great detail the many events leading up to the start of the French Revolution and up to the years of revolt, starting in 1775. He uses imagery and numerous symbols and themes, both subtle and sharp . An important theme introduced by Dickens is man's inhumanity towards his fellow men. Dickens successfully and intelligently depicts this theme with his meticulous use of symbols including beautifully singing and feathered birds, knitting, and feasting on another man's fate. Birds with beautiful singing and feathers are a repeated symbol in A Tale of Two Cities. In the first part of the novel the narrator states: “But the time had not yet come; and every wind that blew over France shook the rags of the scarecrows in vain, because the birds, beautiful in song and feathers, did not notice any warning. (Dickens 23). Here Dickens compares the aristocracy to birds and the peasants to scarecrows for the first time. In this quote, Dickens is trying to point out that the change is up to France. The lesser citizens are hungry and desperate; this is something the nobles fail to notice, as well as the wrong actions they commit, such as making the peasants inferior to the aristocracy. On one occasion, Dickens shows us the perspective of the life of the nobles in this period through the Mons...... middle of paper ......use of Dickens's clever use of knitting, birds from bel canto and feather, and feasting on another man's fate in his novel A Tale of Two Cities, he developed a very moving and informative story. Dickens saw flaws in an event vital to the history and future of Europe and France. Elaborate and connect each flaw through its themes. Both antagonistic classes commit acts of unjust humanity and unjust treatment. These acts are seen through the guillotine, LaForce, the wine shop, and the impoverished state of the farmers. Every class lacks morals, sympathy and heart when push comes to shove. Ultimately, both fall to the same levels, making neither better than the other. Charles Dickens is accustomed to creating a large number of symbols and memorable characters to connect to the messages he wants to leave the reader..
