Definite Identities Affect Female SexualityNowadays, more and more people tend to care and work about social justice, women's rights, as one of the topics, attract people's attention . Society and the female self have changed their opinion of what it means to be female in the 21st century. Therefore, nowadays girls in their twenties begin to behave differently than the first generation. One of the behaviors that has become ambiguous is female sexuality. In “Selections from Hard to Get: Twenty-Something Women and the Paradox of Sexual Freedom,” Leslie Bell argues that neither contradictory direction nor the expectations of others are the main reason causing female sexuality. She makes this statement because the identity a woman has established for herself has an impact. The identity established by women themselves has a greater impact on female sexuality because it represents who she wants to be. Messages and advice in books, magazines, films and television programs appear to direct young women on what they “should” do. But those messages are contradictory to each other, so those messages confused young twenty-year-olds when they hadn't yet figured out what they wanted. Bell argues that “these contradictory directives leave young women struggling, without much help in figuring out what they really want” (Bell 27). Young women today receive good training in academic and professional fields. More and more women attend university just like men, they know how to be professional and how to broaden their career path. However, women in their 20s have a less clear idea of what they want and need in a relationship, as directive messages from others are not helpful. For example, some of the messages young women receive encourage expanding sexual experimentation, while at the same time others suggest young women avoid ties to culture and follow traditions. Because of these contradictory messages that provide no clear direction, young women may be even more confused after receiving such messages. In fact, a better way to solve the problem is for young women to figure out for themselves what they really want and establish an identity without
