What are virtual field trips? According to Kirchen (2011) “A virtual field trip (VFT) is a technology-based experience that allows children to go on an educational journey without leaving the classroom” (p.22). VFTs can take students all over the world. Teachers have the opportunity to create VFTs linked to the curriculum. While teachers can create their own VFTs, there are also free online journeys available that can be used in any classroom, including early childhood classrooms (kindergarten through second grade). Technology does not need to be the most advanced for teachers to be able to implement VFT in their classroom. Lukes (2014) stated that VFT can be used using “a relatively low-tech solution that would work on any computer. VFTs are free and work. They do not require parental permission forms. VFTs also give teachers the ability to showing students distant places they might not otherwise experience. teacher in Indiana could take his students on a VFT to Washington DC to visit the White House did just that with his first grade class Morris (nd) talked about a class that "during their simulated trip, they visited the Jefferson, Lincoln, and Washington memorials, the White House, the Supreme Court, and the Capitol" (p. 265) A Baltimore teacher might show his students the forest Amazonian. The options are limitless and are a great way to enhance the curriculum, especially in science and social studies. VFTs also provide an opportunity for teachers to show students how things are done. Some locations may be accessible to students, but are not safe to accommodate primary school students. For example, students could learn how dairy products are produced. The visit to a dairy farm could be done virtually. The teacher can then have a follow-up lesson and make butter or ice cream with the students. Blachowicz and Obrochta discussed that “teachers wanted to capture some of the positive aspects of field trip learning and integrate them with the curriculum” (p. 262). When using a virtual field trip to visit a place that is not possible to visit, teachers are given the opportunity to bring the positive and exciting components of that place to the public.
