It was first introduced by Joseph A. Faurot, a police detective in the NYPD. While visiting the 1903 St. Louis World's Fair he was fascinated by an exhibit of fingerprints. His fascination led him to travel to London to learn more about the craftsmanship of Scotland Yard. At the same time as his return, the NYPD decided to implement fingerprinting as an official practice for identifying criminals. In 1911 Faurot was the first to present fingerprints as evidence during a criminal trial which ended in conviction. His notoriety led to him being appointed deputy police commissioner before his retirement
