There has been a decline in boys graduating from high school over the past decade. In 2004, in fact, 54% of young people who dropped out of high school were boys. In 2005, 23% were Hispanic, 11% were African American, and 6% were white (Services, 2008). A decline in kids entering college; of those who enter university abandon their studies or take longer to finish them. Questions have arisen about what is happening, why this is happening, and ideas about how to solve the problems. It is suggested that one of the reasons why kids have problems is the school curriculum. The way teachers teach kids and the type of material they choose is what disappoints kids. The rules in schools are stricter and allow no leeway for missteps if mistakes occur, pushing kids out of schools. There are many children who have to choose between family or school. This article discusses the problems found in schools today. What are the reasons kids fail to graduate, along with possible solutions to systems to help kids recover graduation rates. There were kids who dropped out of school because they did poorly in school. There were also kids who were expelled because of their behavior. This may be behavior that has them suspended from school so that the student doesn't feel like they need to come back. Or perhaps the boy may have been expelled from school and they would no longer be welcome. As with Michigan's expulsion rules, if a child is expelled from school he or she is not allowed to attend any public school for a year. This is a very harsh punishment; in fact this could discourage many children from wanting to return to school once the year is over.
