Although the greatest catastrophe for Native Americans occurred long before the founding of the United States, the ultimate calamity was caused in some way by Jefferson's concepts that land and agriculture are the foundations of a civilization. Today, Native Americans live on reservations in difficult conditions, similar to those in Third World countries, in terms of work, housing and health. Many young people have no work and those who work earn less than the minimum wage. Thousands of people are homeless, the rest live in houses, some of which lack essential services such as electricity, telephone, sewers.
