In today's society many countries and even citizens of the United States question the American government's decision to engage in nuclear war. These people consider it unnecessary and say that the United States is a hypocrite who preaches peace, but causes destruction and death. Before and during World War II, the United States faced a difficult decision whether or not to develop and use the atomic bomb. The United States decided to develop the atomic bomb based on the fear it had for the nation's security. In August 1939, nuclear physicists sent manuscripts to Albert Einstein out of fear that Germany might use new knowledge about fission of the uranium nucleus as a way to build weapons. In response, on August 2, 1939, Einstein sent a letter to President Roosevelt regarding the urgent matter of using uranium to create such weapons before Germany (Doc A-1).
