The appendix is a small tube that extends from the large intestine. The appendix may have been necessary thousands of years ago, but it is no longer necessary for digestion. Inflammation of the appendix is called appendicitis. Appendicitis treatment has been practiced and perfected for the past hundreds of years. The first appendectomy, the removal of the appendix, was performed in 1735 by the English surgeon Claudius Amyand on an 11-year-old boy. The first diagnosis of appendicitis was approximately 150 years later, in 1880, by Robert Lawson Tait. The term appendicitis was coined by Reginald Heber Fitz in 1886. The treatment of appendicitis has come a long way since the days of these doctors, but they provided an excellent foundation for modern treatment. The symptoms of appendicitis are many, and mainly involve the abdominal area. Most people with appendicitis experience pain in the lower right abdomen that gets progressively worse as time goes by. Low-grade fevers, loss of appetite, and swelling of the abdomen are also common symptoms of appendicitis. Less common symptoms include painful urination, cramps, and vomiting after abdominal pain. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should receive immediate medical attention instead of trying to treat them with home remedies, as these could make the appendicitis worse. Doctors perform some tests to test a patient for appendicitis. The simplest test to perform is the physical test. In this test, your doctor puts pressure on the painful area to see your reactions, such as contracting your abdominal muscles in an attempt to protect your appendix. Blood tests are also performed to check the patient's white blood cell count. A high count could indicate an infection. Urine tests may also be done to make sure there are kidney stones or a... means of paper... in this report because I got to know what happened to my father and what may have caused it.
