As an English 101 student in my third semester of college, I learned several things, particularly on the topic of writing. One of my goals this semester is to improve my writing skills. I enjoy writing and always put a lot of time and effort into my tasks. After this course I learned the importance of superior writing, not just good writing. The importance is now more evident, especially from the point of view of analysis, ethos, pathos and logos. These topics are essential for critical thinking, for deciphering good teaching aid from bad, and for my continued growth as a student and writer. The complexities of words in books, movies, songs, and other forms of words are part of a bigger picture. Interpretation is an important part of reading and writing, as my analysis truly reflects how I interpret the “bigger picture.” I have learned to continually ask myself “why” on many different levels. I learned to challenge myself, to dig into the words as deeply as possible and unearth every detail to develop inner meaning. As I studied the meaning behind the words for the analysis essay, I found that it changed the way I consciously think about many things. The analysis essay is the project I struggled with the most; I've discovered that I don't naturally think this way. I need to continue to dig deep and reflect on my inner thoughts, that way I am able to do tasks similar to this for future lessons. Without the learned use of analysis, perhaps I would have missed my writing goal this semester; as well as an opportunity to earn excellent grades on upcoming assignments throughout my college experience. Now, the things I hear or see I tend to subject to my analysis of conscience. For example... half of the paper... my intention is to persuade with ethos and logos, that the objectivity of the bilateral argument has stunted the potential pathos, which is often an effective motivation. In my revised essay, I took a narrative perspective on the vegan diet. In this way, I am representing my individual emotions more; in turn, exposing my personal driving force towards veganism. By highlighting what was missing from my argumentative paper, personalizing and adding more, I will (optimistically) get the result I was looking for in my original draft. This is why I chose to review this topic essay for my portfolio assignment. I have inserted the documents in the order in which they were written and presented; this demonstrates my improvement throughout the semester and gives organization to the portfolio. The portfolio starts with my first draft, then the final draft marked by the instructor, and lastly the revised draft.
