In Shakespeare's story King Lear, two of the women were described as castrated and disloyal while the third was honest and sincere. Proving that most empowered women can't be trusted. The story told of a king named Lear who had three daughters named Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. Lear had given his two eldest daughters Goneril and Regan a piece of land even though they had lied to their father by telling him feelings they didn't actually have. Then there was his youngest daughter, who was as honest and sincere as any child could be. King Lear's two eldest daughters, Goneril and Regan, were liars and were not trustworthy women. Both will do and say anything just to gain an advantage. Like for example in Act I of the story King Lear, he owned a huge piece of land that he decided to divide it between all three of his daughters and all they had to do was simply express or tell him how much they loved him. His two eldest daughters were very intelligent and deceptive, they knew they could say the right words to make their father happy and satisfied. The two daughters had said that they loved him more than anyone could ever love anyone or anything; they said that the love they had expressed for him was more than what they had loved for their own husbands. The king, being foolish, gave the land to his two daughters and was so filled with joy at the words that Goneril and Regan had spoken to him. The youngest daughter had been asked the same question but given a very unexpected answer, she had said that yes, she had loved her father but apparently not as much as Goneril and Regan claimed to have loved him. This response made the king very upset and he became indignant with his daughter and made the decision to banish her. This was the proof... middle of paper... It appeared that she had committed suicide by stabbing herself with a knife. It wasn't like all the stories that have a "happily ever after" ending. Cordelia had been killed by her sister's plots and so had her father, King Lear. Goneril and Regan were both liars and contemptuous, they had planned to kill their family members just to get what they wanted. This story had a lot of twists and could have been a little confusing at times, but Shakespeare was just trying to get his point across through the story. That being said, after reading the story of King Lear and writing about this theory, I think Shakespeare gets his point across and demonstrates it drastically throughout the story. This makes my point more clear and proves my point: “not all women are liars and hurtful, but those who are given power… not all of them can be trusted”..”
