Topic > Don't Go Softly Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas

The End of a ChapterDylan Thomas believes that life should be lived to its fullest extent until your last breath, and you should not give up softly. You should try to come out of this world still strong and passionate. This poem is Dylan Thomas's plea to his father to fight death and hold on to life for as long as possible. In Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" the author begs his father to prolong his life and fight his death. . He uses four scenarios in which he encourages his father to try not to give in to death without a fight. The elderly are still expected to 'deliver' and 'burn' at the end of their lives (“Gentle” 2). By this Thomas means that, even if you are old and frail, you should not give in to death easily. He realizes that wise men know that they are destined to die based on the line “Though wise men at their end know that darkness is right” (“Gentle” 4). They should not give up, even if they realize that their lives will become meaningless. “For their words had not forked the lightning” and they would have to fight the notion that they should have done more (“Gentle” 5). At the end of a good man's life he may feel that his "deeds" could have been brighter and greater and this realization may make you feel sad and hopeless because there is no time to repeat your actions. One should not see one's life as shortened simply because it is in the final chapter. You should fight against walking away quietly and believing that you could have done better. Men who live their lives with passion and zeal also eventually realize that perhaps they spent too much time suffering or needlessly worrying about things they couldn't change and perhaps they should try to get even more out of..... . middle of paper…… 'curses him' or 'blesses him' as long as he manages to arouse a strong emotion in him (“Gentle” 17). In essence, he is trying to postpone his own grief in dealing with his father's death and therefore wants his father to hold on as long as possible, not giving up his life "gently" without a fight. Dylan Thomas would feel reassured by his life. his father's love and approval if his father valiantly fought against death to spend more time with him (“Gentle” 4). He would also admire his father's courage and spirit if his father refused to give up his life easily. In analyzing poetry we are always looking for universal truth and how it relates to life. In the event that a child loses a parent, this reinforces the concept of the child's mortality. When your father's generation gradually disappears, it reminds you that your generation is the next.
