The role of a father could be a difficult task when raising a child. The ideal relationship between father and son perhaps could be; the father sets the rules and the son respectfully obeys them. However, it is quite difficult to balance a healthy relationship between father and son, due to what a father expects from his son. For example, in the narratives "Death of a Salesman" and "Fences", both Willy and Troy are fathers who have difficulty earning respect from their children and being a role model for them. Between “Death of a Salesman” and “Fences,” both protagonists, Willy and Troy, both depict the role of a father in distinctive ways; however, in their fight, Willy is the more understanding of the two. Comparing Willy and Troy, as fathers, one might feel more sympathy in Willy for his eternal struggle to keep a home. Furthermore, Willy is alone when it comes to making the necessary payments, because his two sons, Happy and Biff, are unable to hold down a job. “How can he find himself? Is it a life? A farm worker? At first, when he was young, I thought, well, when you're young it's nice to go around, do lots of different jobs. But it's been over ten years now and he still hasn't made thirty-five dollars a week!” (Gioia, 2010) It is evident that Biff cannot hold down a job, and has not produced money well; therefore, Willy's struggle to make payments on the house was difficult. On the other hand, Troy, the protagonist of the “Fences” narrative, also has the responsibility of maintaining a house. However, unlike Willy, Troy received help paying for his house when he received a check from the government. Troy received the allowance when his brother Gabriel was wounded in the war. “…and they gave him a terrible third…middle sheet……he is the more sympathetic of the two. The hardships Willie experienced got the best of him. Willie worked too hard and couldn't offer much due to his low income. Furthermore, Willie received no help from his two children and even lost his job. Willie's continued difficulties maintaining his home led him to end his life. On the other hand, life wasn't as difficult for Troy as it was for Willie. Troy received help paying for his house, and unlike Willie, Troy received a promotion which further made him more financially successful. The relationship between father and son could be difficult. The hardships experienced by both Willy and Troy are what led them to have expectations. Undoubtedly, Willie had to endure more hardship due to the lack of help. Works Cited Gioia, XK (2010).
