Discrimination causes job instability which increases unemployment and poverty rates for LGBT people (Burns). Despite the wait for the approval of ENDA, the legal and social position of transgender people is improving despite unfair treatment in the workplace (Burns). A growing number of states, municipalities, and businesses have adopted anti-discrimination protections that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity (Burns). Along with these protection laws, the public has begun to show support for employment protections and workplace equity for transgender workers
