An important rhetorical device that appears throughout the Harry Potter series is symbolism. There are many names and objects that represent something else and many are introduced in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. First and foremost, Harry's scar represents the true love parents have for their children and how they are willing to do anything, including being killed, to save them. Subsequently, the Mirror of Erised shows a person his truest desires and everything he would like in life. Thirdly, every magician's wand is representative of his character and personality and if the improper one is used, terrible events will happen. Finally, the names of the founders of the four Hogwarts Houses are symbols of the core beliefs and values of each. The first symbol introduced in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is Harry's scar from Voldemort's attack. Lily Potter didn't have to die, but she threw herself in the face of the curse aimed at Harry to save him, an act of true love for her son. Hagrid states that "[it] wasn't a normal cut. This is what you get when a powerful, evil curse touches you…but it didn't work on you” (Rowling 55). However, Albus Dumbledore later explains to Harry that “your mother died to save you. If there's one thing Voldemort can't understand, it's love. He didn't realize that a love as powerful as your mother's for you leaves its mark” (Rowling 299). Even though he is a constant reminder that Voldemort tried to kill him and killed his parents, he also shows that no matter what, family will always be there for you. Finally, it also represents the fact that Harry is a hero because he managed to survive an attack caused by the most evil villain in the wizarding world (Adney and Hassel). The second sy...... middle of the paper.... ..lo!...Ron, come from above – Hermione, stay below and keep him from going down – and I will try to catch him” (Rowling 280). As a result, they easily captured the key, which could not have been done without each other. A further scene that shows the value of friendship is during the bathroom fight with the troll. Although Harry and Ron had recently made some rude comments about Hermione, they put that behind them as they saved the entire school from a vicious troll on Halloween. First, "[Harry] took a great running leap and managed to wrap his arms around the troll's neck from behind... and Ron pulled out his wand and shouted the first spell that came to mind: Wingardium Leviosa! " (Rowling 176), while Hermione helped from the side. If they had not worked together in this way, many students and faculty would have been injured or even killed.
