Within JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit, Tolkien uses the character of Bilbo Baggins to reveal to the reader the constant struggle between heroic and anti-heroic qualities in Bilbo and in ourselves. Bilbo Baggins, having a smaller stature but a bigger heart than Hobbittown. People might start to wonder if Bilbo would be considered a hero? Being heroic means portraying helpful, selfless, and courageous qualities. Bilbo possessed these character traits in The Hobbit. Gandalf exclaimed that there is more to Bilbo than meets the eye, I feel this statement is true because Bilbo has gone through many heroic events that he could have easily backed out of. In The Hobbit, while still wearing the ring Bilbo “beats the creature with his hands – he was trying to poison him to keep him quiet like little spiders do flies – until he remembers his sword and draws it to free his legs. .
